Second Story in the News – Meghan Huebner on WUSA9

Second Story has been in the news lately. Meghan Huebner, our Vice President for Residential Services, appeared this month on a special one-hour news program on WUSA9 called “Bring Our Kids Home,” to talk about runaways and youth homelessness in our area. The program aired in response to recent revelations about the alarmingly high number of missing children in the Washington DC area, and Mayor Muriel Bowser’s response to increase policing and family services in response to the ongoing crisis of youth homelessness and missing children.

Meghan was asked how Second Story would recommend that these missing children reach out for help.

“We would ask that they just call someone, reach out to someone… if not us, then a trusted  family member, and just share what it is they are confronted with right now,” said Meghan. “Why do they feel they need to leave, or why do they feel they would be better off if they weren’t at home?”

“Anyone who calls our hotline can talk to a trained counselor. And then hopefully, if we can’t remedy the situation over the phone, then they can come in and stay in our program, and really look at what the issues are at home.”
