A Bid for Racial and Social Equity in Fairfax County

January 5, 2017

Fairfax County SealFairfax County is poised to take a bold step toward equity, with help from Judith Dittman, CEO of Second Story. In July, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution called “OneFairfax.” The resolution acknowledges inequality in our county and reflects a desire to level the playing field for Fairfax families.

Dittman advised on the drafting of the resolution. She serves as Co-Chair of the Fairfax County Successful Children and Youth Policy Team.

“This is a wonderful initiative, and we hope that it brings more access and opportunities for success for the young people in our programs,” said Dittman.

“A racial and social equity policy provides both the direction and means to eliminate disparities, and work together to build a vibrant and opportunity-rich society for all,” reads the resolution. It calls for a racial and social equity policy to be developed by the Board of Supervisors, jointly with the School Board. The policy will then guide Fairfax to make decisions that point to equality.

At Second Story, we hope that the “OneFairfax” resolution truly will mean that young people in our county are more empowered and better equipped to stay safe, make positive decisions, achieve educational success, overcome personal crises, and move toward a better future.
